It all began when fifteen adults met on a Wednesday evening, August 31, 1977, in a local home to discuss and pray about starting a new independent Baptist Church in Suffolk. These adults continued to pray and met the following Wednesday evening, September 7, 1977 at which time after a session of prayer, felt impressed to go ahead and start a Sunday School the following Sunday, September 11, 1977. It met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Bryant on Murphy’s Mill Road. The church officially started on that Sunday with thirty-two people present. On the following Sunday, September 18, 1977 the church was named liberty Baptist Church. In October 1977, Mr. GrantHuneycutt, the owner of Nansemond Heating & Cooling, Inc. located at 4133 Godwin Blvd., so graciously allowed the church to meet and grow in his building.
The Lord blessed the spiritual and numerical growth of the church to the point that it needed more space to grow. The Lord provided for that need when we were allowed to move into the old Coca Cola Bottling Works at 1030 W. Washington St. We began services there on Sunday, October 29, 1978.
In July 1979, the Lord again blessed us with the ability to purchase 12 acres of land located at the intersection of the 58 Bypass and Route 10. It would take prayer, work and sacrifice for us to pay off the property and begin construction on the facility to be our future home. In May 1982, we moved from the Coca-Cola Bottling Works to Kings Fork Elementary School for services until the completion of the 5000 sq. ft. facility on our property. It would take until March 1983 for the facility to be completed.
A dedication service for our church facilities was held on April 3, 1983, by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, with about 500 people in attendance. Our fellowship hall and kitchen was completed in November 1986. Shortly thereafter, the bus garage was completed debt free due to the gracious giving of time and money by our members. On February 12, 1994, the church had a ground breaking ceremony for a new 11,000 sq. ft. addition for Sunday School and Office Space. Since then our large parking lot has been asphalted and a youth Annex (one large room and four additional classrooms) were added in 2001.
In August 2003, Liberty Baptist Preschool and DayCare was started. We had 52 students enrolled on that first day of School. This school Year, 2015-2016, we have enrolled over 100 students, through the second grade.
The church broke ground on a Family Outreach Center (LOC) on September 30, 2007. The project was completed in January 2009 and the dedication service was held on March 1, 2009.
Our church has always believed that its local mission is capturing our community for Christ while supporting missions globally through supporting as many as 103 missionaries through our years.
Additionally, we have had opportunities to conduct mission trips with our members to South America as well as various trips to various States through out the United States. We continue to desire to give and go on missions when ever God leads us to go. Through out our rich and dynamic history we have had four men of God lead us.
